About Harvey's Pet Grooming

I’m John, the owner and groomer behind Harvey’s Pet Grooming in Carnforth.

After 23 years working for Lloyds Bank, a serious illness in early 2021 prompted me to rethink what I wanted from working life. With encouragement from my wife, Michelle, I decided to turn my love of animals into a new career.

I trained at the Canine Groom School in Gisburn, gaining my Level 3 dog-grooming qualification, and opened Harvey’s in July 2021. That December, I moved into our salon on Market Street, Carnforth.

The location has a special family connection: the salon is opposite the newsagent’s my parents ran in the 1970s. Our name is personal too - Harvey’s is named after my much-loved golden Cocker Spaniel.

That’s more than our strapline. It guides the way I work.

Grooming at Harvey’s is one-to-one, with appointments reserved for the individual pet. 

I take time to understand their coat, temperament and needs, adapting my approach rather than expecting every animal to cope in the same way.

For an older pet, that might mean extra breaks or adjusting how they stand. For a nervous newcomer, it may mean a slower introduction and plenty of reassurance.

A comfortable pet matters more than a perfect finish. If something becomes too much for them, their welfare comes first.

Harvey’s offers dog grooming, hand stripping, de-shedding, puppy introductions and Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning.

I also qualified in cat grooming in December 2024. Cats need their own approach, with patient handling and careful attention to their tolerance. We offer dry de-shedding, bathing, hygiene trims and suitable coat trims, with limited home appointments available by enquiry.

Before grooming begins, we discuss your pet’s needs and agree a suitable plan. Where we notice a concern that needs veterinary attention, we’ll recommend speaking to your vet.

And after their groom, there’s a complimentary studio portrait to capture the result.

Since opening, Harvey’s has received recognition including an England Business Award for Best Pet Grooming Business in Lancashire and Groomer of the Month in Total Grooming Magazine.

We’ve also featured on BBC Radio Lancashire and been selected as Small Business of the Match at Anfield—a particularly memorable moment for me as a Liverpool supporter.

Those experiences have been wonderful, but the most rewarding part remains seeing familiar pets return, watching puppies grow in confidence and hearing that owners feel comfortable leaving their companions in my care.

Our salon is at 26 Market Street, Carnforth, welcoming clients from Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham, Bolton-le-Sands, Hest Bank, Kirkby Lonsdale, Arnside, Silverdale and surrounding areas.
